Every identification costs real money to run: the photo analysis is paid for per photo, and each candidate is checked against a marine species database. Charging for it is what keeps SpeciX free of adverts: your photos are analysed and then let go, never published, never sold, and never used to train a model. Subscriptions and credit packs also cover the app's upkeep, and whatever is left over goes to marine conservation projects.
Questions divers ask
How accurate is it?
Accurate enough to name most reef subjects to the species, and honest when it can't. Every result carries a confidence score, and below a set level SpeciX withholds the detail rather than dressing up a guess. Hard cases - a small, distant fish, or two species that differ only by a fin ray - can still come out wrong, which is why the score is shown on every single result.
What can SpeciX identify?
Anything that lives in or under the water: reef fish, nudibranchs, corals, crustaceans, turtles, rays, octopus and the rest. Hand it a photo that isn't underwater and it reports nothing found, instead of inventing an answer.
Do you keep my photos?
No. Your photo is sent to the service that identifies it, then let go: it is never stored on our servers, published, sold, or used to train a model. What is saved is the result - the species, the confidence and the notes - so you can reopen it in your history.
Does it work for snorkelling and aquarium photos?
Yes. Anything aquatic works, whatever depth it was taken at. Clear, close, well-lit subjects are identified more confidently than distant or murky ones.
Can I use it on my phone underwater?
SpeciX runs in your phone's browser, so it needs a connection - identify your photos back on the boat or at home, not mid-dive.
